Pimpin’ and Giftin’

Happy Halloween friends!  I will admit…I don’t get all cray over Halloween.  I don’t go out.  I don’t dress up.  And because of the new challenge I am participating in….I don’t eat candy.  🙂

Beggars night was last night and we did take Baby Belle out to get some candy.

We only stopped at 3 houses (Kevin’s parents, a coworker of mine, and our neighbors) which was fine by me because I don’t need a bag full of Reece’s tempting me for days on end.  🙂  She had a good time and ate tons of candy corn!

Now that little owl up there isn’t pimpin’ anything….except hugs.  But I am :).
It is a bit embarrassing to do this on the blog but I need some help from you local girls if you can.  I have mentioned before that I do Slumber Parties.  I have been doing it for 7 years and lately it has been a struggle for me to focus on it as much as I need to.  I even announced my retirement after Kevin and I got back from our honeymoon.  But then I started crossfit (which is expensive) and had several clients come out of the wood work requesting parties and I decided I wouldn’t quit entirely but I would slow down.  Well I slowed way down and am realizing that I miss the income and FUN that I had and I need to book a few parties for November before the winter weather comes in (I hate driving in snow!).  I am really funny…so it will be all good!

If you or anyone you know might be interested please email me at shulrick@yahoo.com and I will get them scheduled for a fun girls night out.  Have them mention your name and I will send you a special gift for the free advertising.  Thanks so much in advance.

And now to the giftin’.  I mentioned this fun little idea that I saw on Kristin’s blog awhile back and didn’t have any takers.  I have gotten my gift, a lovely leather bracelet that was very similar to some of the ones I mentioned on this post and I feel like poo because I haven’t gotten to spread the love yet.  I am gonna try this again!

Here is the idea:

-Be one of the first 3 to comment on this post.

-You need to have a blog and be willing to continue to Pay It Forward.  You will need to write a similar post, inviting your readers to play along within 1 week of commenting on my blog.

-Once all of those things are complete, I will be checking out your blog to send you a small  gift I think you will enjoy!

Go ahead and comment even if there are already 3 comments just in case the first 3 can’t follow through in time.

Alright y’all.  Sorry I am not hump day happening but I had more important things to throw out there!

Improvising and Turkey Day Challenge

Hey y’all.

Sorry about the gloomy post yesterday.  I didn’t mean for it to be sad but just wanted to open your eyes to being present in your loved ones lives.  DO IT!!  Thanks for letting me vent about it.  Just sharing my guilt with you made me feel a little better about the day.  And for the record I did cover Baby Belle in about a million kisses last night.

So crossfit…still no big post on it yet but that is because I am having a little problem finding my groove and getting really comfortable with the coaches and other participants.  Nothing that they do…it is all me.  I am just incredibly shy, introverted and intimidated and have been too shy to ask questions.  I have emailed some of my crossfit blogging heros (Janetha, Clare, Tina and Jess for advice and hope they can help guide me with that :(.  I know they are busy women with lives so while I wait I will try to quit being a baby and just do what I need to do!  🙂  In the mean time you can check out their blogs and see what a real crossfit champion is like!

So I skipped crossfit this morning.  I am friends with the box on facebook and they post the WOD the day before.  If I know pull ups are involved I don’t go because I struggle so much with these but am too scared to ask for help.  Now I feel like such an idiot because I didn’t go.  So now I need to improvise the WOD for today and do it on my own.

I do have weights and a weight bench so I can work on the back squats.

I can’t do pull ups….as you know that is a problem for me. ; )  I am having issues finding anything comparable obviously but lateral pull downs with a resistance band hung from our garage rafters?  Any other suggestions?

I can obviously do the 200 meter run and then will substitute kettlebell swings for the wall balls.  That is improvisation my friends.

I also improvised my white chicken chili this morning and used some of our wedding pork instead of chicken.  We still have 7 bags of pork from the wedding so I have to get creative 🙂

See how much is left in that big bag of pork.  We are also having pork quesadillas and pork ragu over noodles this week!  Oy!

So I mentioned Janetha earlier in the post.  She is my most favorite blogger and I read EVERY SINGLE POST!  Today in my email I saw a post announcing a challenge she is involved in.  I am not sure if it is naughty to steal these pictures but Janetha totally designed it for her blog!

Here are the challenge rules which can be found at the box Janetha goes to, GPP.  You don’t have to go their to join.  I will donate my naughty donations to my church’s food pantry.

The GPP Turkey Day Challenge

Beginning Monday Oct. 29 we issue this challenge to those who need to clean up their eating, become more committed to exercise and improve health.

There are 3 parts to this challenge that you must commit to:

  1. You may eat NO ADDED SUGAR – no white sugar, no brown sugar, no high fructose corn syrup (you’ll have to check labels for this sneaky beast). Honey and agave are ok. Unprocessed fruits are OK.  You can have Splenda and Asptartame, but why the H would you want to?  Basically, anything that is a sugary sweet eaten for pleasure alone is off limits.  Just until Thanksgiving day.
  2. You must complete 5 GPP workouts per week PLUS three extra 30 minute cardio sessions per week.
  3. You are to pick a health related challenge to stick to.  Once picked, you should post this healthy challenge and how you will be accountable for compliance to it.  For example: you may choose to begin a few rounds of BCD & post (daily) whether or not you stuck to it.   Below are a few suggestions of health related challenges you may consider:
  • Comply strictly with a GPP meal plan.
  • Get 6-8 hours of sleep per night.
  • 50 extra burpees per day.
  • Pray/meditate daily
  • No unhealthy snacks.
  • Take a daily multi vitamin.
  • 5 servings of fruits + 5 servings of vegetables per day.
  • Eat .9 g of lean protein per lb of lean body weight daily.
  • Eat healthy & correct portions of breakfast/lunch/dinner.
  • Weekly community service.
  • Weigh & measure weekly.

If you are going to commit to any of the above, you have to be committed enough to put some teeth into it.  In other words, it has to HURT if you break your commitment.  So here is how that works:

  1. You must commit to, and define your intention to complete the challenge to comments.
  2. You must post daily results of your challenge to comments.
  3. There are penalties for not following through.  Each time you miss a workout, indulge in a sugary treat, or mess up on your personal goal (your observable, measurable & repeatable one) you are to pay $1, or 1 can of food for every offense!  Strictly enforced by HONOR.  These are to be dropped off at GPP HQ.  Questions or exceptions are to be voted upon by those in the challenge.  Majority rules!

All of the money raised and food items collected will be donated to the Bountiful Food Pantry.

Challenge ends at midnight, Nov. 21st.

We invite anyone looking to get a healthy jump on this holiday season to participate!  We look forward to your successful daily posts!

So here are my added goals in addition to GPP’s rules

1.  I will weigh and measure weekly.  I will post this on Thursday.

2.  I will read the bible daily.  Even if it is for 5 minutes.

I am horrible at sticking to these types of things so I truly need all of your help.

Wanna join?  Comment here.
Until tomorrow!

Celebrate Life

Today is kind of a crappy day for me.  So before I get into that let me show you some celebrating my family and friends did over the weekend.  Kevin and I were invited to join my dad, stepmom and their good friends Roger and Maria (my dad and Roger have been friends since they were in high school) at The Blue Moon Dueling Piano Bar.

It is a pretty popular place and we were told to show up by 6:30 at the latest to be sure we got our reservation.  So we met at 5:45 and had a round (or 2) of drinks and appetizers before the show started.

The show didn’t start until 8:00 and I didn’t know what I was in for.  I thought it was gonna be like the two dudes on the pianos playing classical ballads trying to outplay each other.  It was nothing like that.  You can send a song request along with some cash ($20 or more if you want to hear it!) and they play it!  It was hilarious!

I sang, I danced, I laughed and I got drunk!  Holla!!!!!

It was a pretty awesome night.  My parents do something special around this time of the year to celebrate the life of my little brother who passed away 4 years ago today.

I was so happy that they invited us to join them this time.  My heart aches every day for my parents.  I can’t imagine what it would be like to lose a child.  Especially that guy up there?  Are you kidding me?  Totally rad kid.  🙂

So just be sure to take time today to hug your kids and tell them how great they are.  Call your parents and say hi.  Send a picture text to your siblings and remind them that you think they are awesome.  Make time to take your grandparents to lunch…even if they live an hour away.

I think about my brother every day and along with that I feel a great sense of guilt.  He was much younger than me and when I was too busy trying to figure out my life I was missing out on my brothers short short life.

I rarely called him to see how school was.  I didn’t embarrass him enough at his sporting events.  I didn’t know any of his little girlfriends.  I didn’t say I love you enough.  I wasn’t present enough and that feels really shitty.

So hug your family.  Play monopoly or uno.  Get as many kisses from your kids as you can today.

Make today awesome.

Poo Poo On Me

I am crabby today.

This is happening.

And I just ordered Jimmy Johns for lunch.  (Sorry Kevin!)

Don’t feel sorry for me.  I am being a total drama queen.

Come back Monday and I will tell you something awesome.

Um…Yesterday Was Hump Day? And Blue Cheese

Hey all!

My schedule was all coo coo yesterday and I completely blew off posting!  Whoops!  I have some great blog posts to direct you to but first I need to explain the blue cheese thing.

The first time I really tasted blue cheese was maybe a year ago in a buffalo chicken salad that I got at The Blue Moon Dueling Piano Bar.  I knew I didn’t like blue cheese dressing because I tried using it as a substitute for ranch and ew!  I went ahead and tried the blue cheese crumbles though because I was brave.  Lucky me!  It was delish and complimented the buffalo sauce wonderfully.  Ever since that salad I order it all the time at restaurants even if it isn’t on the menu.

So last night my friend Tina and I went to Okoboji Grill in Newton.  They had a buffalo chicken salad and sandwich but I was really craving a wrap.  They had several wraps on their menu but not a buffalo chicken wrap.  I didn’t see it being a problem getting one though since they had all the ingredients on hand.  I was wrong.

When I asked the waiter (I was very polite because I know how annoying it can be to just make up your own meal at a restaurant!) to make that he gave me a look.  He then said we could take the chicken bacon ranch wrap and put buffalo sauce on it.  Great!  When I asked if I could get blue cheese instead of the standard shredded cheese he said no.  You see…Okoboji Grill uses Maytag Blue Cheese.  It’s true, even this sign says so:

I get it!  A restaurant using a local dairy that produces award winning blue cheese.  That is awesome.  I offered to pay extra to get the blue cheese but no dice.  What?  I got frustrated and ordered the salad.  It was good but it definitely wasn’t the wrap I was craving.  😦

I did get a bunch of blue cheese chunks which was nice.  Check this stuff out….so good!

So while the restaurant definitely didn’t make me happy last night this yummy cheese sure did.  If anyone from Maytag is reading this I would love to do a tour if possible!  🙂

So now on to what I should have posted yesterday!  Hump Day Happenings!!!!

1. I am slowly slowly slowly trying to get rid of processed foods in the house.  It is hard but I know I need to try a bit harder.  Here is part 1 of some great Q & A on real food!

2.  Yesterday was Food Day.  I wouldn’t have known if Jessica hadn’t posted this on her blog.  I took the test and scored a C.  I suck!  😦

3.  I hate wasting food.  It is like I grew up in the Great Depression or something.  I will eat food until it has mold growing on it.  Gross I know but I haven’t died yet 🙂  I was stoked to find this post from Simple Organized Living that talked about salvaging fresh produce!

And I think I will leave it at that.

Do you like blue cheese?

Do you eat real?

Until tomorrow (which is Friday!!!!)

It has been hovering in the 70’s here in the good old midwest the last few days.  Just a day or so of that left and then it will plummet into the 40’s.  That is Iowa for ya!

On Sunday my sister Mikayla and I took Baby Belle exporing at Brown’s Woods here in Des Moines.  I had always gone to the Ledges in Boone to hike and didn’t even know this place existed until Kevin mentioned it.  It was pretty amazing!

We took the long 1.5 mile hike which I took a crappy I-Phone picture of.

Baby Belle had a fun time exploring for the first part of the hike.  I didn’t bother with the stroller because she always hollers, “All done!” or “Up!” when stuck in the stroller for too long!

Once I decided to take the long hike is when Baby Belle decided she wanted to be “all done.”  My sister and I ended up carrying her the rest of the way….and we forgot our water bottle in the car 😦

But it was fine because I made her stop and let me take some senior portrait practice pictures.  I don’t want to brag…oh yes I do!  She is cute huh?

What a great way to spend a nice sunny Sunday!

Where is your favorite place to hike?

Have you ever hiked in the winter?

Until tomorrow y’all!

Pinterest Sunday Recap

Hey all!  I had a pretty good weekend!  I have a lot to recap but today I am just going to focus on Pinterest Sunday because it was pretty rad.  I posted a spoiler on Friday but made a few changes by the time Sunday came around.

I did make the healthy cookie dough bites that I modified from this recipe.

Here is how my bites went down.

I still started with one can of garbanzo beans.  I was so excited to find the reduced sodium.  I was making something sweet so it made sense.

I then followed the recipe the same except instead of just adding 2 tbsp of oats I added about a half a cup.  I also added a scoop of vanilla protein powder and rolled it into balls.

I ended up not mixing my gunk enough and the chopped pitted dates I used didn’t blend very well.  I think if I would have mixed it better it would have lent to the sweetness better.  Poop.

I also added way to many chocolate chips to the finished product so it was overload.  They still tasted pretty good although I could totally tell they were healthy 🙂  And I am a total idiot and didn’t take pictures of the finished product.

We made our shirts which were from a tutorial found here.  Mollie was the only participant (my mom was the only other one who showed up..and it was a total surprise!) that brought a shirt so it went by pretty quickly.  Here is Baby Belle photo bombing!

She was super helpful!  🙂

And I am such a dork.  I didn’t take a picture of the final shirt either!  But you can see I have one of the shirts I made the night before on!  They are totally cute!

So here is an added project that I decided to throw in.  I found these tiny little craft sticks and I couldn’t resist.  Mini things are super cute.  So we made a version of this.  But the cool thing was the mini sticks we used fit perfectly in some old baby food jars I had been hoarding for some reason.

We all went around our group and came up with different things to put on our sticks.  Pretty fun!

We ended up not working out since my neighbors were having a cook out and hanging out on their raised deck.  We didn’t need an audience 🙂

Next Sunday we are doing a Halloween theme and I am super excited.  If you are in the area please come!
